Sense image size and change default to channelwise histogram for "large" images.

This issue should be addressed with my latest check-in as well as making the histogram asynchronous.

Hi, Susan

Will this change be incorporated into the develop branch of the main repository soon? We would like to test it in South Africa (but we can check out your fork for that if necessary).

We are waiting for Alex to have time to get the Python Circle Ci tests
to run again
in order to make sure they pass. There are some large changes in my
branch (nothing to do with the histogram) that may take some work to get in.
