How words could be?
\nHow they could steep.
\nTo swim in unannounced
\nrecounting false, rhyming memories
\nto all who would listen.
\n
And some listened and sipped.
\nAnd of those, some tasted.
\nAnd of those, some lived and relived.
\nAnd at least one,
\ndaring still past the dregs,
\nnever made it all the way home.
To travel alone and old is to
\nsleep upright on the subway,
\nsubsist on Central Park dates
\nand hostel kitchen coffee.
\n
To eat a hot dog nearby
\nand strike conversation across
\nan open packet of sauerkraut.
\nTo buy a sim card on the plane — blind.
\n\"Why would I need that?\"
\nhe asks, sincerely. \"I'll take three.\"
\n
Always making everyone aware
\nof how pleasant they've been,
\ncrossing them
\non their lonely, rambling path home.
Frozen was this place.
\nUpon it placed a placid slate
\nof ice. Its might slighted
\nonly by the wooden flame's reach.
\nHeat-stained beech
\nsunken in a pool. Stone breached.
\nIts presence slowly traced.
\nFlickers glowed, and fore-elements effaced.
\n
A bear born in such barren land,
\nfur matted under the harsh cold,
\ncarried further on by
\nthe wailing wind's sail.
\nThis creature comprehends
\nfrom deep within.
\nAncestral knots never untied,
\npulled ever tighter and petrified.
\n
Fur flakked with mud, dirty
\nand damp, absorbs the savory
\nsmoke to a saturated choke
\nand evokes streams
\nof warm steam stacks to
\nrise enveloped in empty howls.
\nThey dance intertwined
\nwhispering up unto the divine.
\n
In between yawns and
\nhowls he gnaws at his prey.
\nRaw flesh that lends an ache
\nto his jaw bone,
\nstrained near break. All
\nto sustain another hunt
\nbetween long, lonesome flights
\nalong the arctic plain by night.
