in the spirit of making a sans companion to Garamond, I closely followed the tilde shape from EB Garamond. Admittedly, I don't like it all that much either. I'm thinking of flattening it out.
Yes, we have the style issue, but even in Garamond, the non-strictly horizontal positioning of the tilde seems a bit odd to a native speaker of a language that uses this diacritic a lot (Portuguese, in my case) — the tilde tends to look like an acute accent. I think this oddity is the same as if we saw this "Garramond-style" inclination also in the circumflex accent, for example.
