Software Metadata - What is it? How does it help? How do I include it in my repos? #12

I would like to champion a breakout session around software metadata. As (research) software finally gains the recognition as a valuable scientific output, describing/referencing software becomes also more important to follow scientific good practice. Hence, software artefacts need to have descriptive metadata to enable compliance with the FAIR principles and, thus, also an integration into the well established curation processes of the scientific libraries.
In this proposed breakout session the following topics will be covered

  • What is possible with metadata enriched software?
  • What are the metadata requirements for software?
  • How can they be included?
  • How can they be lead to additional value for the authors/contributors of the software?
The envisioned presenters for the session come from the Helmholtz HIFIS platform, the HMC project HERMES (here is a logical bridge to proposal HERMES Code Sprint #4), the Dutch eScienceCenter, and the UK-SSI.

Hi @juckel, thank you for the proposal! As we're (slowly) moving toward more specific submissions, could you please add more details to the proposal? We'd need 1-3 people responsible for the BOS, a short abstract/appetizer incl. stuff attendees can take away from that and so on. Who would be your speakers? Is this more a discussion or a course or a tutorial? How could you make the bridge to #4?

Ok - let's give this a try:

Abstract

As (research) software finally gains the recognition as a valuable scientific output, describing/referencing software becomes also more important to follow scientific good practice. Hence, software artefacts need to have descriptive metadata to enable compliance with the FAIR principles and, thus, also an integration into the well established curation processes of the scientific libraries.
In this proposed breakout session the following topics will be covered:

  • What is possible with metadata enriched software?
  • What are the metadata requirements for software?
  • How can they be included?
  • How can they be lead to additional value for the authors/contributors of the software?

Organizers

speakers

  • Stephan Druskat on Citation File Format (CFF)
  • Oliver Bertuch or Oliver Knodel on HERMES meta data workflows
  • Carole Goble on RO-Crate meta-data container format and EU initiatives

Format

  • presentations and discussions on what is still needed and missing
  • mostly comparable to the "Birds-of-a-feathers" sessions, e.g. at ISC-HPC

bridge to #4

  • identified issues that can be covered by HERMES can be either addressed directly in HERMES Code Sprint #4 or moved into the issue list there

Hi again! Sounds good. How long do you think the BOS should be? We plan with slots of 90 minutes with the default length of one slot.

One slot on this rather specific topic will be sufficient.

I added a label to this break-out. Can you check if you feel it is appropriate and change it if not? Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi all, the unconference is only 3 weeks away now! On day 1 there will be a breakout blitz where all session organizers should advertise their sessions. 1 minute, 1 slide, let people know what you intend to do. Please prepare this slide in advance and add it right here (PDF please), by September 20.

I now won't be able to attend the unconference, so @juckel takes over completely 🙏.

Have fun with the session(s)! Please add the pad you're using also here for people to see what you did.

If possible, please prepare a 1 minute wrap up of your session for the farewell session on Thursday afternoon! What did you do in the session, how would you like to continue, how can people contribute after the unconference etc. We'll go through the blitz slides again one by one as in the blitz session.
