So, just to report in, usb-dh boots on my mac laptop (2 yrs old), but not on:

  • 2011 iMac
  • Windows 10 machine (1 yr old) - once I found how to boot from usb on windows 10 (thanks, microsoft, sheesh - you have to go to 'advanced startup settings'. You can then reboot from usb, but there emerges a 'security policy' that blocks it. I think this can be changed by fiddling in the bios, but I don't want to do that as it's not my machine.
  • ancient decrepit windows 7 machine. It finds the stick, allows me to select it to boot, and then rolls over and dies (never ever boots).

Thanks for testing all this! I have a feeling it shouldn't work on ancient machines, since it's UEFI-only at the moment. New Windows machines are annoying with their boot policies, but those are easily fixed in BIOS (I had to do this with my laptop when I first bought it). I'll add something about this in the README. As for the 2011 iMac, I don't know what could be causing that. Are you getting any errors?

I should open a wiki page for a list of machines that DH-USB is known to work with, and break with. Thanks again for all the help with this.
