Regarding the icon - at the beginning, I was thinking about something similar as your proposal, but eventually, it kinda felt that it would mislead the user in thinking that this app can download and install tools on its own, as in reality - it only notifies the user about an update and provides a link to the page where it can be downloaded. Because of that, I didn't want to include any kind of symbols, that would represent the download or install action.
What do you think about it? Wouldn't this kind of icon mislead the user into incorrect understanding of the app's functionality?
Also, initially, I didn't want that the app icon would be something totally different than the main app icon is. I would like them to be similar so that end-user would easily know which apps icon it is.
I understand your concern regarding the download symbols. I just found the current icon too complex and detailed for a status bar icon and wanted to throw some ideas.
Another idea would be removing the Mac and only keeping the gear. Something like this:
First, I'd like to thank you for the great work! This is a really useful and cool utility.
I think the status bar icon could be improved to look simpler and more consistent with system icons.
I have two ideas for the new icon:
Similar to the one used on https://developer.apple.com/develop/:
Similar to the one used in the old AppStore:
The filled icon could be used when there are new updates in the last 24 hours (probably with a green arrow).
