International journalists struggle with a lack of connections and information when it comes to getting a newsroom job in the US.
That’s why we started Journalism Jobs for Internationals. Our target audience is global journalists who want to work here and newsrooms seeking to become more diverse and inclusive.

Our first step is to build an informational platform of newsrooms that hire journalists with visas or will sponsor them. At this point, our list is small. We hope – with your help – to expand it. So if you know of a newsroom or newsrooms that will hire journalists with visas, please enter that information here.

Who is eligible?

The H-1B is available to persons who are offered temporary professional positions with at least a bachelor’s degree and equivalent knowledge by U.S. employers. The salary of the H-1B worker must meet the prevailing wage requirement - average wage paid to similarly employed workers in a specific occupation in the area of intended employment. Read more about prevailing wages here. The DOL collects wage data of different occupations

Who files the petition?

The employer must file a petition on behalf of the prospective employee.

How long does the process take?

Two to eight months, depending on whether it’s a cap-exempt petition; or even longer if you get an RFE (request for further evidence).

Cap-subject vs cap-exempt petitions:

The USCIS runs a lottery every year for up to 85,000 visas, with 20,000 reserved for people with a master’s degree. Not all H-1B nonimmigrant visas (or status grants) are subject to this annual cap. The advanced degree exemption is an exemption from the H-1B cap for beneficiaries who have earned a U.S. master’s degree or higher and is available until the number of beneficiaries who are exempt on this basis exceeds 20,000.

Employers that qualify as cap-exempt under the H-1B visa program are exempt from the annual numerical quota system that limits the number of H-1B visas available. This allows them to file H-1B petitions for foreign workers at any time of the year, without having to compete with other companies or worry about numerical limitations. Cap-exempt employers include:

Institutions of higher education: Public or nonprofit institutions that are licensed to provide education beyond secondary school, admit students who have graduated from high school, and offer bachelor's or associate's degrees

Nonprofit organizations: Organizations that use their earnings or contributions to achieve a mission or goal, rather than transferring them to their owners as profit. This includes organizations with religious, charitable, scientific, literary, or educational purposes. The organization must also be affiliated with an institution of higher education in some way, such as being operated by the institution or sharing ownership or control with the same board or federation

Nonprofit or governmental research organizations: These organizations are also exempt from the H-1B cap

Read more about the H-1B lottery and electronic registration process here.

Approximate cost?

Cost ranges from about $3,000, which includes the basic filing fee, ACWIA fee and attorney fee, to $12,000,which would include the previous fees plus a premium processing fee)

Can I transfer my H-1B to a new employer?

H-1B visa holders can transfer their visa to another employer, but the new employer must file a request for an H-1B transfer petition. A transfer is usually less risky than a new petition because you don’t need to enter the lottery again and that USCIS already recognized you have a “specialty occupation” by granting you the H-1B.

It can take several weeks or months to complete the process, and it's recommended to wait until transfer status is granted before starting the new employment. If your current employer withdraws the H-1B they petitioned for you and the transfer gets denied, you might lose your H-1B status.
