A nice gameplay addition would be to have spells and/or skills that the player could cast.
They would likely be unlocked with gold just like the tower tiers, and then cast with mana. Mana could be hoarded when killing monsters, or generated over time, or both. Or there could even be a utility tower that generates mana actually :D
If monsters dropped it, it could take the form of a collectible item (with a loot probability) that the player would have to fetch before it disappears. The same logic could be extended to some kind of gold bonuses too, or even autocast spells (like you pick the item and all enemies are slowed down for 10s).

Classical spells would be like meteor fall (great zone damage) freeze (zone, ennemies are slowed/stopped). But this ould be a great way to try new things like dimensional hole (zone instant kill, monsters go back to their dimension), or other things like brain wash (ennemies killing ennemies), or maybe something even more original, like a power where ennemies would become plants blocking the ay that would take 3 seconds to the ennemy to destroy ?
I like the ideas 😃
About the utility tower producing mana: How about it enables to all surrounding towers (which it influences) that they add +1 mana per shot instead of producing it by itself? this would add more value to the strategical placement and which towers you place near it (with this ability, towers with higher frequency would be better). also I would add this ability to tier 3 maybe, since it sounds quite powerful.
