This release is named Cephalotus follicularis, also known as Albany pitcher plant. The insectivorous leaves are small and have the appearance of moccasins, forming the 'pitcher' of the common name. This release is named after Alocasia macrorrhizos, also known as Giant Elephant Ear. The corm needs to be thoroughly cooked before being eaten in order to destroy the calcium oxalate crystals. The basal part of the stem, which can be up to 1 meter tall and 20cm in diameter, is peeled and used as a cooked vegetable. A very easily digested starch can be obtained from the stem.
