Hi John, I tried to email you a warning this was coming, but here is the official request. I'd like several new Psi-MOD IDs to represent crosslinking between collagen molecules that occurs when lysine or hydroxylysine residues are modified to the aldehyde form by Lysyl oxidase. This is best explained in this paper - PMID:9883973 Figs 4, 6 and 7. In summary Allysine can spontaneously interact with either hydroxylysine or lysine yielding 4 possible two-way crosslinks. These two-way crosslinks can then react with a further residue, either histidine or lysly aldehyde or hydroxylysyl aldehyde, yielding at least 5 different 3-way crosslinks. This is another paper that shows some of the structures involved (PMID:1348714) and this paper shows HPLC and mass spec analysis of collagen crosslink subtypes (18442706). Very interesting! There is a possible 4-way crosslink (see the Reiser paper) but this doesn't seem to be established. There's also an alternative three-way link with arginine but that also seems yet to be established. Thanks, Steve.
