For some reason if I try to switch to resolution which does not exist yet, it do create new one but fails to switch right away. So I have to run it second time.

This also something that happens to me when I run the xrandr commands manually. It seems like a longstanding bug in xrandr itself. I'm planning to make a workaround for it.
