All,
Since the beginning of 2014 I have a problem accessing my protected wallet in Multibit (version 0.5.17). At this time there is an amount of 2.439 BTC stored in my wallet and it cannot be opened due to password failures. I'm 100% sure that the correct password is used, but no luck.

Who of you guys/girls can help me with retrieving the bitcoins. I'm willingly to donate 0.25 BTC to whom who can help me retrieving the BTC's.

Hope to here from one of you and hoping to give the 0.25 BTC to whom can help me.

Plz help, Felix

Will take a while. Current OSX disk is encrypted. Need to decrypt first. Will take aprox one whole day or more. As soon as decrypt has finished, Disk will be attached to W10 machine and use recuva to search for files

Will get back to you.

Yep, I'm using OSX everywhere, except for the machine with Recuva. This is a W10 Miner with a lot of GPU's. Getting some extra Ethereum :) .

If Recuva is the right tool, we will see the results, when the OSX disk decryption process has finished and analyzed in my W10 machine. The decryption process will still take more than one day. I think more time is needed, but no rush. Wallet is inaccessible for a long time and actually I had already decided for myself that I wouldn't be able to access it. When it’s gone, it’s gone, but this is the last try. If this doesn’t work, the wallet and associated key will be destroyed.

Keep you posted with the status.

Update:

Came to the conclusion that the current OSX disk is NOT the original one where the wallet was made on. The disk was an 7200RPM disk and it has been replaced with a SSD disk.

I still have the "old" RPMdisk, but it has been overwritten many times.

Please advice.

I have so many 3,5"old disks here. The only thing I'm sure about that it was a 500GB disk. This one is connected to the W10 machine. It has been overwritten multiple times with Windows and Linux versions. Is it then still possible to retrieve the old files?

UPDATE:
Is there a specific file to look for on the medium? Got access to a lot of recoverable files, from 1996 till now. Please share info what to look for.

Download a bitcoin lite wallet (not litecoin) and replace wallet.dat and the key file with the ones you have. try that and get back to me

When searching using Google, no exact match is found regarding bitcoin lite wallet. Many variations of litecoin wallets are available, but none described in your post. If you could point me into the right direction, it would be appreciated.

Thx, Felix.

That method will not work, as you have an encrypted aes multibit classic key.

(Alternatively you can send me your private key in an encrypted email (tutanota or protonmail) and a bitcoin address you would like it sent too, for a fee of 40% of contents. if i am successful)

Upto you! 60% of something is better than 100% of nothing!

do what i was saying before about replacing the key and wallet.dat files, but with multibit. then, open the wallet console and dumpwallet to get the 12-word mnemonic.

Hi @65bert73,

I had exactly the same problem as you with the wallet set up on 2013-12-31 using the old multibit classic wallet and I have already lost hope as you do. After many days and hundreds of attempts, I was able to find a solution. In the meantime, I also built every kind of multibit anew, but without achieving anything in this way - there is a very big problem with dependencies in this project after so many years, and you can work on it for weeks without results, because you cannot run unit tests correctly during building. In my opinion, it is impossible to run it correctly and use it to load the wallet after so many years, so I based all the work on decoding the encrypted key.

Reading the comments above, I can see that most people do not have a complete idea of what is going on and there is no point in following this path. If the password to the .key file is correct, I am sure that we will be able to decode it together, especially since our wallets were created in a similar period on the same software.

My suggestion to make it safe is to set up a teleconference using zoom / skype / google hangouts etc., which option you choose yourself. I don't want any files from you or try to cheat you. I came across this thread because I struggled with the problem for a long time and looked wherever possible. Yesterday late at night I managed to solve the problem and read the multibit decrypted key to Electrum.

If you are interested in cooperation, please contact me via [email protected]. I think it can be successful, or we can at least try ;)

Finally, for confirmation, a screenshot of my recovered wallet with the date of the first transaction

Download OPENSSL
Put private key on desktop use notepad program to open and save it there. (MAKE A COPY AND PUT SOMEWHERE ELSE AS BACKUP)
Open Command Prompt CMD
change directory to Desktop cd
in CMD once in Desktop directory type openssl
Then type the following (to decrypt the key into WIF format that you can use to import to another wallet.)
enc -d -aes-256-ecb -a -salt -in Bitcoin.key -out Palintext.txt
it will then ask for decryption password (this is the password you used to encrypt it in your wallet.)
This should then produce a Key you can use to import into a wallet.
If this solved your problem please use the following BTC account 1LVGAvkaF3MSi7WmmmdejUcFC5FFPRQxh5

He Man,

As mentioned in the initial post, I have no password anymore, or the password I remember does not work. So, no access to wallet. Something is seriously wrong with this program (multibit). I'm sure that I also saved a unencrypted version of my private key, but it is also encrypted.

Result: 2.4 BTC lost forever. Last transaction was december 19 2014, so almost 7 years ago. Take a look at the address: 1Dk2EvmoYanKYEsmzLRrApsrfskhRe3S7L

Thx for the suggestion anyway.

GrZ.

the btc still there, this means you did not resolve it. https://btc2doge.org/ can help if you still have the files. you only need tip him a share after succeed. the bruteforce way wont work as there is a bug in the old multibit wallet encryption. this means even you have the correct password, there is still chance got locked due to the bug.
