performance gains for minimizing the size of svg images

in some cases, e.g lines are too long but the background clip property is used to hide this. it would be better to make svg images fit exactly so that there is no extra work to render

Thinking about this more, the current approach might be used to avoid having to know what the node width is -- since you don't want dependencies in your style properties.
