VoiceAttack as a barrier to entry?

I'm curious about how much of an issue the requirement for VoiceAttack presents to people who would like to experiment with this project.

I use VoiceAttack for a number of applications and find that its a valuable, robust, and incredibly powerful tool for automating tasks and controlling applications - even without using any of the speech recognition or speech synthesis features. But I recognize that purchasing, installing and running it as a pre-requisite for a project like this is a potential barrier.

The question about building a stand alone app that presents the same/similar iRacing replay features has come up and although that is certainly possible, the development of a system to handle the user interaction is far from trivial (especially given the fact that VoiceAttack already does all the input/command/profile stuff so well).
