I want to avoid referencing /etc/passwd if ldap is selected for sssd authentication. Is there a way to do this?

Hi @sjsong could you provide more details about this request? Normally, the files database is included by default in the /etc/nsswitch.conf lines for user lookups.

passwd: files sss systemd
shadow: files

You can remove this files if you don't want to lookup users from /etc/passwd at all, but maybe I misunderstand your request.
