Feature Request Description

A common issue for people is that they do not know to update decky before a SteamOS/Steam Client update.

This results in Decky "disappearing" even though the service is still installed, and the majority of plugins. People then seek out forums, discord, youtube videos, etc. to try to resolve this problem.

While there are various different ways this could be resolved, my personal favourite would be an opt-in auto update, a "simple" solution for people would be:

  • The .desktop file is created in the menu or desktop for desktop mode for the Steam Deck
  • If possible, also add it as a non-steam game to the currently logged in user(s)
  • Update documentation / guidance / information to let users know that it is there, and that they can re-run/click/open that file to re-install/update decky

Further Description

This would help to reduce people seeking out support and be able to reinstall decky themselves, especially if they find interacting with the console cumbersome, or have problems with making files executable. Decky is already great at being user friendly and mostly GUI oriented, and this would round it out in lieu of an auto update.

~/.local/share/applications may be a better location for the file, as some people prefer a clean desktop, but perhaps we could also ask the user where they'd prefer the icon to be.
