Converting the name and comment text to uniform style

I noticed the extremely long regex with alternative characters being used. filter_variables

I was wondering if it would be acceptable for me to try to find the code that reads the comment and name ; then see what I can do. I'd also use PyTest in order to ensure that everything still works of course.
