Part of OpenInfra, this small project will

  • Prior research and definition of important widths + categories (see talk by Robert Huxford here)
  • Import data on road widths
  • Analyse the data
  • Perform sanity checks
  • Quality assurance
  • Export outputs for use internally
  • Export aggregated and non sensitive data for use externally where possible

To clarify, road widths from where? OS data? Something public or not?

From anywhere but yes, pre-exisiting road-widths datasets already exist in OS products, so that would be my first port of call. If we get pre-calculated widths from OS we would need to go through a process to open derived datasets and I'm in conversations to help make that happen.

Looks like @microlambert has done many of those steps already.

I just had a quick play with https://segment-anything.com/demo on satellite imagery, and got reasonable results in areas without tree cover and shadow. I'm sure there are segmentation models better tuned to roads, but this one was quick to try in the browser!

Wow, impressive! Also on this topic, @KitAllwinter is on the case I believe, getting existing width estimates will be a good starting point.

Could be worth trying this on any good raster imagery we've got for roads

http://kuanbutts.com/2018/02/22/street-widths/ could be applied to OS parcels or OSM building footprints in some cases
