App search missing

App search feature stopped working. The Google pill used to search apps and no longer does. I tried reinstalling and clearing data. For a short period after that, there will be a special app filter that shows up but then disappears.

The workaround is to place Google search widget to home screen and execute it. Then app search works in Rootless launcher too, at leats for a while. Nevertheless it seems this launcher is no longer maintained, any good alternative? Nova launcher is not the way.
