How to handle preferred units in the code

E.g., user wants to have lengths in ft and pressures in psi. They want to always convert to whatever their preferred unit it and to do that transparently without reference to quantity type of the current object:

for name, var in vars.items():
    converted_vars[name] = preferred_units.convert(var)
