I find it useful to able to reference whitepapers as of a particular version. As I understand commit b2b36d7 is version 2.0?

Good point. It would definitely be helpful to have a versioning process.

I'm not entirely sure what it should look like, but perhaps a rolling release cycle may make sense. Where we keep contributions open for 2 months, near the end of that period we freeze and do edits/polishing and release a versioned PDF, before starting a new 2 month cycle. Each cycle might be a minor version (2.x).
