Please describe what you would like to see in this project

In PR #91, valuable tests were added for the plugin provider. However, the documentation on them is lacking, so it takes a lot of review to understand what each of them is testing.

So it would be valuable to document the high-level purpose of each test, as well as briefly document the sub-sections of the tests.
