Thanks everyone for the helpful discussion. I've updated the cheat sheet with everything in this thread. I'll keep this issue open until we get confirmation about @twm's question, about whether ICO files made from PNGs have decent browser support, esp on IE. |
Android's decoder, at least, doesn't support PNG-in-ICO: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=748100#c10 It looks like Firefox for Android's support is a WIP. |

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ICO_(file_format) states that ICO is a container for BMP and PNG but I couldn’t find any way to make an ICO with PNGs.
The problem with BMP that it does not really support compression.
Have you had any luck making ICOs with PNGs inside?
