You could have found a better excuse, but seriously, saying you can't continue with the project just because the downloads are costing you a lot on the server? when there are thousands of services like web file, mediafire, mega, among others, where can you host these files?
Your behavior and your mediocre mentality gives me a lot of courage.

There's no need to be nasty, we are all people with feelings.

Have you tried to host a 1GB file that consumes 10 terrabytes of bandwidth a month?

Trust me when i say i have tried a lot of file hosts and either get shut down for excessive usage or users complain about the advertisements and/or slow download speed.

The only option i have left is to break up the file and write a downloader but i just don't have the time to do that anytime soon.

you could use a google drive account and upload the files there.
For example, MEmu play uses Google Drive to load its emulators.

Also, the web archive no longer has low speeds like 3 years ago. web archive has greatly improved the download speed of its servers, so it is a good alternative to host the files there
I even dare to say that I use the web archive to host personal files privately.

@titet11 Google drive worked great until i got hit with "download quota exceeded" at which point i was unable to use my google drive for a day or so, this happened each time the quota was exceeded. Similar story with Microsoft's OneDrive except the download just stopped working and i got a notification that it was taken offline. I am certain if i paid for a business account i would get more bandwidth.

Typically speaking, any large open source project secures funding from somewhere to enable high volume downloads.

I assume you mean the internet archive, i wouldn't want to add burden to that service. They do a great service to the internet community and are constantly looking for funding and fighting off internet troll's (mostly content copyright).

The files in my project are largely available elsewhere, the answer should be to utilize those resources rather than trying to continue as i have.

I'm also not entirely convinced that all the downloads i serve are legitimate requests either, there's something fishy about the stats for the downloads. i switched to using cloudflare but the downloads keep coming. But it's almost the exact same bandwidth every day +/- legitimate traffic. Weird.

Why don't you want to use web.archive.org ?

That one has no limits with downloads and if you are talking about avoiding paying for a storage service, without a doubt web archive is the best there is.

I have a few suggestion regarding this :

1. Cloudflare R2: You can explore using Cloudflare R2 as a solution to handle your bandwidth requirements.
2. Archive.org and SourceForge: These platforms can serve as good alternatives for hosting your files and managing bandwidth usage.
3. Mediafire: Mediafire can also be a viable option for managing your bandwidth needs.

(We have a website that hosts a 3GB downloadable file and (now) requires up to 3TB of monthly bandwidth. To fulfill these requirements, we have opted to use R2 and drive links on our site. We made this choice due to previous issues with annoying advertisements on Mediafire, which led us to discontinue using their services.)

the fact is that this programmer is mediocre and does not want to look for more new services. I think Amazon even has a service to host files with no bandwidth limit.

And how to forget about sourseforge, if that service has always been used.

I am already using Cloudfare but wasn't aware of R2, looks like a viable solution. i'll check it out tonight.

A year has passed since its last update but as of today there is no update. I hope that now that you have found a solution you can continue with the project, especially now that we are in the age of artificial intelligence.
