Inheriting layout front matter

I'm looking to inherit a "body_class" variable from a child layout, not entirely sure how to do this. Here is a quick example:

src/_layouts/post.liquid

---
layout: default
body_class: "post"
---
<p>{{ resource.data.date }} - Written by {{ resource.data.author }}</p>

{{ content }}

src/_layouts/default.liquid

<div class="{{ layout.data.body_class }}">
  <p>{{ resource.data.date }} - Written by {{ resource.data.author }}</p>

  {{ content }}
</div>

Right now I have to specify this in the resource which basically means having to repeat this variable for each post. I could also just copy/paste the default layout, and hardcode the class, but I'd like to avoid that.
