Rather than using a daemonset to replace the kernel, build, upload and use a custom Ubuntu image with the kernel in place.

We will have to do something similar with EKS from what I recall : https://github.com/awslabs/amazon-eks-ami

It looks like this isn't possible for GKE? Within the cluster creation "portal" UI there is no option to select an image. Additionally, the node images documentation does not mention usage of custom images.

From what I've seen online, DaemonSet for GKE might be the best approach to make node modifications.
