Right now, right as the job begins running, cronie spawns the mail command and pipes all output to it. For longer-running jobs and with mailers that connect to MTAs right away, the MTA times out after a certain time, completely losing any cron output.
Debian's crond fixed this 9 years ago (see also a relevant bug report).
