Relicense assets to be DFSG compliant #42
Comments
P.S.: there's also more "action-centered" version: https://soundcloud.com/underpolaris/under-polaris-core-of-the-1. I'm big fan of both of them :) |
I suggest to use a project instead of issue — it will allow to easily arrange TODO/InProgress/Done things. |
@qwertychouskie I can go and setup project if you want to. They are quite easy to work with and useful for few-states tasks (like this). |
For now I'll stick with a traditional issue as it's better to link to when making the requests, and handles very large numbers of items better. |
Any progress on this? |
Template: I have been working on a game called Cubosphere. The original authors abandoned it a while back, and me and some others have been working to fix it up and make a new release. One of your songs, , has been used in the game. We are currently working on fixing asset licensing issues in the game to ensure as many people as possible can enjoy it. Would you be willing to release the song under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International license? See #42 for more info on the licensing effort, and for a video showing the song used in the game. Thanks! |
Sorry to crush your hopes, but based on my own experiences with "relicensing" efforts (I added fully-libre sounds for OpenTTD), the majority of people will likely either not respond at all or explicity insist on their proprietary licensing (for various reasons). But since this issue is already old, you have probably figured that out already. ;-) That doesn't mean you shouldn't try anyway, because a small percentage might still say "yes" (also based on my experience), That's still better than nothing. Still, eventually looking for complete new replacement files will be inevitable … either that, or the downfall of the Copyright System. ;-) Anyway, how many people have been contacted already? Sadly, I have no idea where to find such high-quality textures, I think this task will be even harder than finding replacement music (there's plenty of libre music online btw). Unless it turns out the textures are already libre. I feel like what this will basically boil down to is a full conversion. That is, replacing ALL or almost all artwork of the game because of the bad license situation. |
Right now the assets are mostly "free-to-listen-to" or CC-BY-SA-NC. Assets should be relicensed to be DFSG (Debian Free Software Guidelines) compatible (preferably CC-BY-SA 4.0 International), or otherwise replaced.
Why is this needed?
Having assets with a non-DFSG-compatible license (or no license) means that Cubosphere can't be distributed on many platforms without potential issues; also, to have Cubosphere be packaged in Linux distributions requires properly-licensed assets.
