If players could rearrange the cards in their hand, that would make it even better :) (Fyi it's important for our game, to see trump, which are spread among the four suits. Fwiw game is Sheepshead aka Schafskopf)

Forgive me. You may have a better solution to accomplish the card sorting. Fwiw, here's an idea I had.

If each player had a box where he could keep his cards for private viewing.

The public view would not change - the public view would, for instance, always show the backs of the cards, and would make it easy for other players to see clearly how many cards each player has left in his hand.

But in each player's private box, he could move and rearrange his cards - and play with them nervously, or arrange them with different strategies in mind. Nice and large and easy to futz with.
