Command bar buttons that expand to a menu should be grouped together, and visibly distinct from those which perform an immediate action.
One example of such a visible indicator would be a small ^ in a contrasting colour in a corner of those buttons which expand to a menu.
Another example of a visible indicator would be a button border.
Whatever indicator is used, such a distinction could increase usability for those who aren't already deeply familiar with roguelike commands, and who wouldn't therefore automatically know that "search" is a direct command that immediately uses up a turn and allows enemies to attack, while "cast" brings up a submenu and so can be cancelled without any problems.
