@rabernat, I would like to rewrite history on this repo because I cannot deal with that ridiculous commit message created by the GitHub Pages action. I will setup a custom commit message in the workflow. I will also reset my last commit in the process because I think we may still need the .nojekyll file. Please let me know if you oppose a rewrite.

This sounds fine to me. FWIW, I have never checked out this repo or even looked at it. Its only purpose (for me) is to deploy the site. Are you checking it out and directly editing / pushing content? Help me understand why this matters.

It barely matters. I did need to remove a file manually that wasn't removed by the workflow, but now I'm not convinced that it's not needed. It is nice to have the source commit hash, but the short version would be better. Otherwise I think the commit messages are unreasonable.
