Is your feature request related to new functionality not yet included in the product? Please describe.
The ability to generate DOIs during the deposit process for certain types of material was requested by SCO during the Discovery Phase requirements gathering process in 2017. This functionality would be useful for collections such as Emory Theses and Dissertations, OpenEmory, or research data sets.

Is your feature request related to a problem or a change to existing functionality? Please describe.
A clear and concise description of what the problem is. Ex. It is very difficult to [...] because [...]

Describe the solution you'd like
Several user stories were previously documented including:

  • As a Student Submitter or Faculty/Researcher Submitter, I want to generate a Digital Object Identifier for my deposit, so that I can obtain a stable link to the work and leverage DOIs' citation and discovery best practices
  • As a Repository Administrator or Collection Manager or Self Depositor, I want to mint DOIs for selected institutional repository material (research data sets, ETDs, selected scholarly pre-publications), so that we can leverage DOIs citation and discovery features for broader scholarly audiences

Describe alternatives you've considered
A clear and concise description of any alternative solutions or workarounds you've considered.

How will this impact users?
This feature would benefit campus depositors including students and faculty/researchers. It would also enhance work done by metadata specialists, who would not have to retroactively add a DOI minted elsewhere to a work.

Additional context
Additional elaboration would be helpful.
There is now a Hyku/Hyrax gem that mints DOIs that could be investigated.
