The request for this kind of overview: https://ethereum-magicians.org/t/ethmagicians-council-of-prague-integrity-ring-community-code-of-conduct/2836/35?u=jpitts

We should follow the guidelines here: https://github.com/ethereum-magicians/scrolls/wiki/HOWTO-Form-A-Ring

This is a template: https://github.com/ethereum-magicians/scrolls/wiki/Ring-Charter-Template

I would go ahead and create an issue like the how to guide suggests, but I still don't know why it's called the "Integrity Ring." Why was that name chosen and/or would it be helpful to suggest other names that might be easier for new people to understand?

For example:

  • the word "integrity" is not a common English word so it's harder for non-native English speakers to understand. Even for native English speakers, it's kind of vague.
  • words like "communication", "respect", or "collaboration" are more active. They point more to what the ring is doing. This would make it easier for people to understand what it's for. Not saying we should name it any of those, but they're examples of more accessible and active words.

@burrrata - I see your point. For me, it helps if I imagine the word "Preserving" added to the name. The whole idea of this Ring is to preserve the integrity (in the sense of wholeness, unity, or cohesion) of the Ethereum community.

Thank you for explaining that 🙏 It makes a lot more sense that way!

The words we use are really important to set the tone and direction for anyone who hears about the group. We want to maximize signal and minimize confusion. To me, the word "integrity" does not immediately convey what you described. As I mentioned, the word "integrity" doesn't immediately convey anything, even though it is technically correct. Also, words like "unity" or "cohesion" create a vector of frustration if people feel like their views are being silenced by the majority. The goal is to promote diversity by giving people a safe place to express themselves without being discriminated against. The goal is not to silence people and make them part of a homogeneous norm. This needs to be emphasized.

As cheesy as it sounds, what about something like "freedom"? This signals the idea of empowering people. It also implies that people can express themselves however they want as long as it doesn't compromise anyone else's freedoms. It's a strong foundation that all successful communities are built on. This minimizes the impression that people's individuality will be compromised in any way. It simultaneously emphasizes the goal of ensuring that everyone has the equal ability to speak freely. A ring that supports people's freedoms by ensuring that they can express themselves however they want without discrimination or abuse. This seems like something everyone can get behind, and since the CoC is opt-in, this is essential.

What do you guys think?
