This may of course be a rough approximation in case of "fingered" elements. However, agglomerates generated by Rtrees are always close to rectangles or square (even if with "sawtooths"). |

Instead of summing all the contributions from the underlying triangulation, just compute the volume of the bounding box associated to the polygon.
