It is possible to store a git repository in a mercurial one.
I use BFG Repo Cleaner to clean this up, but it seems possible to skip .git directories automatically on export, because Git fails to checkout a working copy with a .git directory in history.

I have created #130 to discuss a generic method to do this kind of repo manipulation.
