Automatically immediately reconnects on disconnect, no way to disable on iOS #29

It reconnects automatically immediately, so had to delete the profile on my iPhone.

On my MacBook I unchecked Connect on demand checkbox in the Network preferences for my VPN and then I were able to disconnect.

Any way to uncheck that checkbox by default?

Always on does not look like a sane default, what do you think? Am I missing something?

You can disable "on demand" connection on iPhone, just as on Mac. Open Settings and search for VPN – you will find the profile record, then tap ℹ︎ and you will see the toggle. After disabling "on demand" you'll be able to connect/disconnect VPN manually.
