If you go to about:addons then scroll to HNTP > ... button > preferences > theme you can change it to Hacker, Midnight, or whatever you like.

Perhaps add a feature to support dark mode at sunset and light mode on sunrise? And/or custom schedule?

Dark mode matched to the system theme would be great. Should be doable with some media selectors in the CSS easily.
