The document doesn't provide any rationale for why ION is needed given the existence of HAL, Siren and Collection+JSON. I think it is important, when proposing such a new format, to provide such a rationale.

Thanks for the issue - I agree! We definitely have what we believe are well-founded reasons - we'll communicate them for sure. I'm not sure it belongs in the actual RFC/spec, but it should be communicated clearly (Readme, project site home page when it is up, etc).
