To reproduce:

1. Place two torches vertically
2. Walk into the torch as to stand in the same block space
3. Attempt to place a full block

Not really something you have to pay attention to. Only relevant if actually playing the game

it just looks like old minecrafts lighting engine, its works in the same way, the colors are in modern version just not so contrasty
