This is required for a minimal working prototype. When opening the menu, it should show the name of the app which was focused previously.

  • Ubuntu GNOME (X11)
  • Ubuntu GNOME (Wayland) - works with gnome-shell-integration
  • KDE Neon (X11)
  • KDE Neon (Wayland)
  • Windows 11

There is a request for a corresponding portal which could solve this under Wayland. For now, we will need adapter daemons, I fear...

This works on X11 and Windows by invoking all kind of command line tools. Ultimately, we should create a native module for that. Similar to this one for instance.

I see that Wayland is still very difficult for such kind of an application. Nevertheless, the minimal prototype has shown that it is possible in theory - yet it will require custom backends for the various desktop environments using Wayland.
