He noted that the Voodoo Boards have died out with the advent of smart
phones, texting, and e-mail. He also noted, correctly, that people don't
always have fannish friends' phone numbers.
He was wondering if it might be possible for members of Worldcon to sign up
to participate in a Voodoo Switchboard. Someone could send a text message
to a central clearing house which could forward it to the correct fan's
cell registered phone. That way if [they] needed to get in touch with
me (for instance) but didn't have my number, his text could arrive and I
could choose whether to respond (and thereby give him my number) or not.
This would require:
Collecting information on whether members with public name visibility would be okay being contacted by other members + preference between sms & email
Capability to send sms messages (e.g. Twilio, Plivo)
UI for all of the above
As an extension, inbound sms & email handling for replies
