First, I'd say nice plugin.

Second, my suggestion/feature request is to add option for auto hide after time out from stopping to scroll so user can see the content without anything behind transparent element, then auto show if user touches or mouse event..

Third, I'd also suggest adding a fourth demo for "Circle" besides the Pill demo.

I just found a PR for the second issue and I recommend to be merged, very nice

I've been thinking about this, my only issue with it is if a user is reading an article, and the scroll element hides, it forces the user to scroll to show the scroll element. At this point the user is already scrolling so it could be rendered useless. I'd be interested to hear how it's working out for you so far!

I myself is applied the PR and using it with this feature. You can make an option for it so developer has the option to enable/disable it.
