Issue Type: Bug

Behaviour

Run the debug but is closed automatically without error message or anything. After version 2022.8.1 stop working.

Local machine is Windows 11

Remote machine info:

Expected vs. Actual

Expected: Allow to debug using SSH remote debug.
Actual: When run the debug stops automatically and close. Not error or warning message.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Press F5 to run the debugger or Launch debugger from panel.
  2. Stop working automatically after 2 secs or so.

Diagnostic data

  • Python version (& distribution if applicable, e.g. Anaconda): 3.6.8
  • Type of virtual environment used (e.g. conda, venv, virtualenv, etc.): Venv
  • Value of the python.languageServer setting: Default
Output for Python in the Output panel (ViewOutput, change the drop-down the upper-right of the Output panel to Python)

Experiment 'pythonTensorboardExperiment' is active
Experiment 'pythonSurveyNotificationcf' is active
Experiment 'PythonPyTorchProfiler' is active
LSP Notebooks experiment is disabled -- not in treatment group

Thanks for the bug report, In the latest release of debugpy, support for Python versions older than 3.6 was dropped as Python 3.6 is not supported upstream since last year by the Python development team (this is also the support promise the Python extension itself follows as mentioned in our README).

We are discussing/planning on breaking out debugging support into its own extension (#19559). That would allow us to do an initial release using debugpy 1.5 which you all can pin to, but then allow the Python extension to update as normal (as long as it happens to support your older Python versions). Feel free to subscribe to that issue, follow our blog at https://aka.ms/pythonblog, or follow the VS Code release notes where we would announce any new extension.
