Extra space added to the end of serialized elements

All of the serialized elements (code, a) include an extra space after the element which is obvious if the following character is punctuation. I can eliminate the space by applying {display: inline-block} but then, if the next character is whitespace, the element ignores the whitespace and connects to the next word.
