Places Data Schema Guide Mapathon [ANTIQUATED]

Chad Lawlis edited this page Oct 9, 2015 · 2 revisions

#Places Data Schema Guide

This guide is intended to serve as a learning resource and map standard for contributing data to Places. It was originally created during the National Park Service Mapathon April 21-24, 2015. This is a living document, intended to lay the groundwork for discussion and collaboration on the formulation of a gold standard map data schema across all of NPS.

The schema laid out here focuses on our 5 priority data themes:

  1. Roads
  2. Trails
  3. Buildings
  4. Points of Interest (POI)
  5. Parking Lots

Questions for us to consider:

  • What features are missing from the map?
  • What features are tagged inconsistently/incorrectly?
  • What features are missing icons?
  • What features could use more/less emphasis (at higher zooms, etc) on the map?
  • What pre-existing datasets are available for import/reference?

Places Tag GIS Tag OSM Tag Description OSM Wiki
nps:places_id= PLACESID= (ADD) - Unique id generated by Places. -
nps:unit_code= UNITCODE= or UnitCode= - NPS alphabetic code for a NPS organizational unit. Generally 4 characters from the first two characters of the first two words of the name of the Unit or “Other”. Set in Places. -
nps:unit_name= UNITNAME= - Full name of the NPS organizational unit. -
nps:group_code= GROUPCODE= - Administrative unit code that is different from the individual park units but includes the unit identified in the UnitCode; The NPS unit code of the NPS unit that administers the unit listed in UnitCode. Generally 4 characters from the first two characters of the first two words of the name. Set as nps:unit_code in Places. -
nps:region_code= REGIONCODE= or RegionCode= - The alpha code of the NPS Region associated with the unit identified in UnitCode. Unique alpha codes for the NPS region: AKR, IMR, MWR, NCR, NER, PWR, SER. Set in Places. -
nps:location_id= LOCATIONID= - Location ID from FMSS database for relationship with FMSS and further population of attributes. String format in order to merge with FMSS output in Excel format. (NPS Life-Cycle Business Practices Volume 1, 2007) -
nps:asset_id= ASSETID= - Asset ID from FMSS database for relationship with FMSS and further population of attributes. String format in order to merge with FMSS output in Excel format. (NPS Business Practice: Roads (1100) Asset, 2014) -
nps:is_extant= ISEXTANT= or IsExtant= - Is there a physical trail observable on the ground? Set to Yes in Places -
nps:map_method= MAPMETHOD= or MapMethod= or Map_Method= - How the geospatial feature was derived. Set to Unknown in Places. -
source= MAPSOURCE= - Source from which the feature was derived. Set in Places. link
nps:source_scale= SOURCESCALE= - The source’s scale denominator. Set in Places. -
nps:source_date= SOURCEDATE= or SourceDate= Source_Date= - The source's date. Set in Places. -
nps:xy_error= XYERROR= - An estimate of the measurement error in the horizontal. Set in Places. -
nps:notes= NOTES= or Notes= - Notes or remarks regarding unusual or important aspects of the data. link
nps:restriction= RESTRICTION= - Any usage restrictions or restricted status of the feature. Each standard will use a defined domain. Set to Unrestricted in Places. -
nps:distribute= DISTRIBUTE= - Public or Internal Only. Feature is available for public distribution or consumption by a public facing system or service. This flag indicates whether or not this feature may be displayed to the public. This flag can be used by any automated service planning to consume and display this dataset publicly. This attribute does not necessarily coincide with the sensitivity flag in the sense that a feature could have no sensitivity restriction, but still have a value here that prevents it from being distributed. However, any feature marked as restricted should automatically have a false value here. Still, to prevent distribution of sensitive data, the appropriate query for feature accessibility to the public is: RESTRICT = "Unrestricted" AND DISTRIBUTE = "Public". Set to Public in Places. -
nps:created_date= CREATEDATE= or created_da - Date the feature was created. Set in Places. -
nps:created_user= CREATEUSER= or created_us - User who created the feature. Set in Places. -
nps:edit_date= EDITDATE= or EditDate= or Edit_Date= - Date the feature was last edited. Set in Places. -
nps:edit_user= EDITUSER= - User who last edited the feature. Set in Places. -
nps:feature_id= FEATUREID= or FeatureID= - Associated attributes can be linked using this ID (this ID is not FMSS related). Used primarily for national program data management. -
nps:geometry_id= GEOMETRYID= or Geometry_ID - A unique identifier for the geometry (feature). Used primarily for national program data management. -
nps:source_system= n/a - Set in Places. -

###1. Roads

Note: Roads coming in from GIS as RDCLASS=Local map to Places as highway=unclassified. Roads created in Places as highway=tertiary or highway=residential or highway=trunk map to GIS as RDCLASS=Local but nothing maps from GIS to Places as highway=tertiary or highway=residential or highway=trunk.

Note: Road links coming in from Places as highway=x_link map to GIS with the Tag associated below. Nothing from GIS maps to Places as highway=x_link.

###5. Parking lots

Parking lots are tagged as nodes (points) in GRSM. According to the OSM wiki the best practice is to use a node for smaller lots and an area (polygon) for larger lots. NPMap recommends adding both, a node in the middle of the lot along with the area extent of the lot as a polygon for enhanced design customization.
