Contact photo disapear after removal of original file

It seems the avatarPath stores just url to file. The contact avatar copy should be stored into contact list (into ~/.local/share/system/Contacts/avatars) and shouldn't depend on files in ~/Pictures directory.

if avatars are copied to ..../Contacts/avatars, would it also be desirable to resize/compress them, since the avatar is generally displayed small?

Resizing to reasonable size makes sense, but I wouldn't say that avatars should be displayed small.
