Does nginx unit support auth_basic for routes

Unit itself does not support HTTP authentication ("Basic auth") the same way NGINX does. However, it is possible to handle basic auth within a Unit module, if that works for your use case.

Can you eleborate on how to configure that? What do you mean with a Unit module?

I believe @danielledeleo meant that your application itself could, using library/framework-specific libraries, implement auth itself.

We don't currently have plans to support HTTP Basic / Digest authentication directly in Unit because we do not believe it is commonly used on the current Web.
