I didn't understand the hierarchy of the files.

pandoc-xhtml.tex maps all possible XHTML tags to ConTeXt so that a user can start right away.

The styling file from-pandoc-to-context.tex is book-related and only needs ConTeXt styling information. ConTeXt users can use their custom setup here. No additional work to be done.

You could make that clear in the documentation.

I agree: this is a must.

Do you suggest the exact passage where the explanation would fit best?

It would make a first hint in the README to make clear what the structure of the projects is.

An in depth explanation might fit into "Parsing XHTML Sources"
