These are return type differences I spotted when working on pypa/setuptools#4744

pytype still seems to fail here.

Yep :/ I wanted to create or associate an issue on pytype's side if this still fails. So I'll do that before reverting.

According to mypy_primer, this change has no effect on the checked open source code. 🤖🎉
