EWWW Image Optimizer is the big name in the game, and for it to be compatible with WP Engine, we need to use the "Cloud" version of their plugin. This requires an API key to be used and comes with monthly fees: https://ewww.io/plans/
There's also WP Smushit, which is free.... but made by WPMU-DEV. So that's a toss up. Reviews are good and it is recently updated. Just feel like we've ended up getting burned by their code a lot in the past. https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-smushit/

There's also Imagify, but they only allow 25MB of compression free a month (Which is nothing, really) https://wordpress.org/plugins/imagify/
